NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Sunday that Clay Matthews was diagnosed with a broken thumb following the Green Bay Packers' victory over the Detroit Lions.

.A league source now tells ESPN's Adam Schefter that the injury is expected to sideline Matthews for at least one month.

.Fox Sport's Jay Glazer reports that Matthews had successful surgery on his thumb Monday.This still is a debilitating loss for a Green Bay team mired in a three-way tie for first place in the NFC North.

.Matthews is the defense's most disruptive pass rusher as well as a strong run defender.Matthews, who suffered the injury in Sunday's victory over the Detroit Lions, was injured on the final play of the third quarter when he sacked Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford for a 12-yard loss.Matthews rushed off the edge and was unblocked on the play, which was his final snap of the game."I'm hopeful it's not season-ending," McCarthy said Monday."I think we're all hopeful, but you have to get all the opinions and make sure you always do right of the player".
